Heart Disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in America. February is American Heart Month and Pondera Medical Center wants to share the love about cardiovascular health.
We are healthcare professionals, but we are also parents, daughter & sons, friends, siblings and so much more. We put our hearts into our everyday work of sharing health and wellness with our community. To keep your whole family Heart Healthy, we encourage you to make sure you and your family are staying active and eating a balanced diet. For good cardiovascular health, the American Heart Association recommends five servings of fruits and vegetables every day, 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, refraining from smoking and maintaining a healthy weight, cholesterol level and blood pressure.
Pondera Medical Center was recognized with the Cardiac Recognition Award at the Montana Hospital Association’s annual meeting in Billings on September 19, 2019. The Cardiac Recognition Award is sponsored by the Cardiovascular Health Program within the state health department. The Recognition Award singles out Critical Access Hospitals who demonstrate that they have the infrastructure and commitment to provide high quality care for patients with acute coronary syndrome, which includes heart attack. Receiving the Cardiac Recognition confirms Pondera Medical Center meets high standards related to the utilization of evidence-based cardiac order-sets and protocols, provides laboratory services 24/7, has a well thought out transfer protocol and has administrative commitment to treating heart attack patients.
Also in 2019, Pondera Medical Center proudly announced the certification of our Cardiac rehabilitation program by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). This certification is recognition of Pondera Medical Center’s commitment to improving the quality of life of patients by enhancing standards of care.
Cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation programs are designed to help people with cardiovascular problems (e.g., heart attacks, coronary artery bypass graft surgery) and pulmonary problems (e.g., chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD], respiratory symptoms) recover faster and live healthier. Both programs include exercise, education, counseling and support for patients and their families. Completing a cardiac rehabilitation program reduces the risk of a second event by 30% and reduces risk of mortality by 60%.
At Pondera Medical Center, we are very proud of our Cardiac Rehab program and the extensive work that Jenny Broesder, RN & Program Manager has done to make the department a tremendous success and an invaluable tool for our area communities.
PMC Cardiac Rehab is supported by effective resources structured to the needs of each individual patient. Our program strives to reduce morbidity, mortality and disability from cardiovascular and pulmonary disease through personalized education, tailored fitness programs, and strategic disease management. Our patients receive: close care through an MD directed monthly treatment plan, monitored exercise using our 24/7 on-site Wellness Center and rehabilitation department with a Cardiac Rehabilitation Specialist, and education using a smart board, discussion, and conversation to give each patient a thorough understanding of their rehabilitation progress.
Cardiology services are available at the PMC Rural Health Clinic through contracts with visiting specialists. Visiting cardiologists at the clinic include Dr. Shawn Kelly and Ellen Sparks, PA-C. You can learn more about these services or view the visiting provider schedule by visiting our website.
Heart disease is a leading cause of death in both Montana and the United States. Last year, over 3,000 Montanans died from the impact of heart disease. Symptom recognition and timely, high quality treatment are important factors in reducing death from heart attack.
