Dr. Calvin Schlepp, a 2003 graduate of Conrad High School, is an Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Helena Orthopaedic Clinic and will now be available to see patients at the PMC Rural Health Clinic. Dr. Schlepp’s first day as a PMC Contract Provider is slated for Friday, April 26th; and he will return monthly. This is a great opportunity to see a talented specialist if you are having joint or muscle pain, a sports or overuse injury such as ACL pain or rotator cuff pain, pain from arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions. As a specialist, Dr. Schlepp works with each individual patient to perform a physical exam and then create the best plan of treatment to fit their needs and goals. This might include injections, home exercise, physical therapy, minor invasive surgery and lastly, major surgery if necessary.
Pondera Medical Center is excited for Dr. Schlepp’s regular visits to his hometown facility to serve the area patients. Stephanie Keil-Harris is the Director of Rehabilitation Services at Pondera Medical Center. On Dr. Calvin Schlepp joining forces with PMC, she had to say: “Oh, we are thrilled to have him here. This is such a great opportunity for Pondera County, our Hospital and our Therapy department to learn from a talented and experienced specialist. We are looking forward to utilizing our PT and OT staff, equipment and resources in conjunction with Dr. Schlepp’s protocol to serve our patients.”
Since working in Helena, Dr. Schlepp and his team have noticed a lot of people from Conrad and the surrounding areas making the trip to Helena to be seen at his practice, even in adverse weather; and that was a lot of the drive behind his desire to return home. Cole Mosby, Practice Administrator at the Helena Orthopaedic Center adds, “Dr. Schlepp is a great addition to Helena and Montana, in general. Montanans want to see Montanans, especially a name they recognize, because of that deeper trust and understanding. We were seeing so many patients and getting so many referrals from the Conrad area because of Dr. Schlepp’s good reputation; so he is happy to make the drive to Conrad every month to save his patients that trip. It makes sense for everyone.”
Dr. Schlepp grew up in Conrad working alongside his family on their farm and ranch. “If a patient comes to Dr. Schlepp with pain from the work it takes to pull calves or because of long hours haying, he’s going to understand that. That’s one reason he and his wife are such an assets to Montana Healthcare. They’re from Montana and they understand how Montanans live and work,” says Mosby.
One Montana Cowboy from the area was referred to Dr. Schlepp at the Helena Orthopaedic Clinic and he says of the experience: “I recognized that name from when I was a little kid growing up watching football and basketball games! When I saw Dr. Schlepp, it made me feel really good that he took the time to listen and understood how hard it was to not be able to ride horses and take care of cattle because of my hip pain. That’s how I make my living. I broke my hip when I was 8 years old and I’ll evetually need a whole hip replacement. I’m 27 now and since seeing Dr. Schlepp and getting my injection, this is the first time I’ve been able to get on a horse without being in excruciating pain. I have a really rare hip condition; so it just makes me feel really good to have a guy I can talk to and know that he’ll do his best for me wherever we go from here.”
Dr. Schlepp specializes in the treatment of a variety of orthopaedic conditions and performs several orthopaedic procedures with great success. Anyone who has lived in the area could likely associate the name “Schlepp” with some tremendous Conrad High School basketball, football and track teams, including a football team that advanced all the way to the state semi-final game. A love of sports, combined with opportunities to treat college and professional athletes at the University of Washington and with the US Ski Team, has certainly fueld his desire to become the talented specialist he is today.
“Dr. Schlepp will be a great asset to PMC with his local knowledge and cutting edge skill set,” said Dr. Jay Taylor, who is Chief of staff at Pondera Medical Center and also born and raised in Conrad. “This will greatly enhance our mission to ‘Exceed the healthcare expectation of those we serve.’ We welcome him back home!”
