What is a Registered Dietitian?

A Registered Dietitian (RD) is a professional who specializes in nutrition science and is trained in the use of nutrition to prevent and control disease throughout the life cycle.  The RD credential indicates that the practitioner has completed an accredited 4-year university program, 1200 hours of supervised practice, and passed a national exam requiring 75 hours of continuing education per 5 year period.  Registered Dietitians are your most credible, objective source of nutrition information.

Why is nutrition important?

Medical experts recommend individuals follow a healthy diet, maintain an ideal body weight, and exercise to help prevent the onset or progression of disease. If you have a personal or family history of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, obesity and/or if you are concerned about your overall health, then you may want to meet with a dietitian for an individualized meal plan.

What types of services does an Registered Dietitians provide?

RDs counsel people on a variety of topics including weight loss, weight management, menu planning, preparing healthy meals, safe food handling, healthy cooking techniques, and reading food labels. Counseling appointments made for medical nutrition therapy cover various disease states including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, renal disease, cancer, obesity, and wound healing. Helping people learn about staying healthy and eating the right foods by providing accurate nutrition information is main component of the nutrition education provided by a RD.

Are these services covered by insurance?

Many insurance companies will now cover your visit to see an RD. Such insurances as Medicare allow for a certain number of hours for people with diabetes or renal disease to receive nutrition education. It is advised to check with your insurance provider to determine eligibility for these services or you can contact PMC patient access insurance specialists at 271-3211 for assistance. Most insurance companies require a referral from your physician for coverage. Our staff at PMC can assist you in the obtaining referrals to help guide you in the development of your personalized nutrition plan. If you wish to make an appointment with our RD for weight loss or general healthy diet information such as menu planning, a physician referral is not needed.
